Everyone has a different vision of an ideal morning, but the majority of these visions include some sort of drink. Whether your morning consists of a steamy mug of coffee, a quick shot of espresso, or a rejuvenating cup of green tea you are reaping precious health benefits that go far beyond helping you roll out of bed. Let’s go over some of the most popular morning sips and how to get the most of their specific skill-sets.
Probably the most beloved of morning beverages is the heavenly hug in a mug that is coffee. Studies have gone back and forth over whether or not coffee is beneficial or detrimental for health. But more and more studies are revealing that a daily cup not only increases productivity, but also can deter illnesses, including liver diseases, Parkinson’s and diabetes. Before we start gulping down a pot a day though, we need to think about the quality of the coffee we are drinking. Most people don’t order black coffee from their local café, and if they brew their own they load it with heavy cream and sugar. Some Starbucks drinks have over 500 calories! Let that sink in. I had a client who drank a large Frappuccino from Starbucks every single day. Once we sat down and talked about it she decided that 500 calories a day from a cup of coffee was not worth it. She slowly cut it back and went on to lose 20 pounds (with training and good nutrition)! Sipping on black coffee is your best bet, but if you aren’t there yet just be mindful of what you are putting into your mug. And if you go out for coffee, save the specialty drinks for a once a week treat. If you are interested in learning more about the health benefits check out this study here.
There are many different types of tea and they each boast an impressive resume of health benefits. I’m going to focus on green tea because its benefits are the most relevant to the people I work with. Green tea is chock full of antioxidants, particularly catechin, which decreases inflammation, helps reveal glowing skin, fights cancer, helps with brain health, promotes weight loss, fights free-radicals (anti-aging), improves digestion, lowers cholesterol… need I go on? Hot Water with Lemon.
Sipping hot water with lemon first thing in the morning is something that models, actresses, chefs, and trainers all have in their feel-great arsenal. This concoction is detoxifying because it is a natural diuretic and it helps boost the liver, so you will flush out more toxins. It also helps with digestion and reduces bloating. Since there is vitamin C and antioxidants in lemons, this AM beverage will give your immune system, skin, and metabolism a little boost.
Easily the most important drink for all hours of the day, drinking water first thing in the morning is one of the best things you can do for yourself. We are so dehydrated after a full night’s sleep, so try drinking a big glass right after you brush your teeth in the morning. It will give you an instant energy rush, help kick start digestion for the day, and rehydrate you. But don’t stop there! Water should be number one on your beverage list throughout the day. There are so many people sipping on diet coke and energy drinks all day every day. If those drinks were simply replaced with water, we would feel SO much better! Essentially every organ and body part need water to function, so it’s just one of those things that you must make yourself do. No questions asked. Shoot for half of your body weight in ounces throughout each day. Your body will thank you for it.
